Electrolytes 101

Electrolytes are all the rave right now and most people don’t even know what the f*** they actually are. They’re simply minerals, the five key ones are:

Potassium
Calcium
Magnesium
Sodium
Chloride

I work out about 12 hours a week and have zero issues staying hydrated. You do secrete electrolytes as you sweat and some people sweat a lot, or are endurance athletes. So for select people this might actually be a vital product instead of, once again, people thinking they can solve all of their problems with a supplement. Spoiler alert, you still need to drink water ***holes. Too much or too little of electrolytes are a bad thing.

People Think you Can’t Run Long Distances and be Jacked

Client spotlight: @brianmazza. Brian has been running 100+ miles every month for the last 8 months straight on top of weight training with me 3 days a week. When we weight train together, we usually do 2 total body days and 1 push/pull day where we let his legs recover before his long run of the week. Even if he runs a marathon the weekend before, we still train upper body the following Monday.

There’s a common misconception that you can’t be an endurance runner and still be jacked, and while it’s not easy to do both, it absolutely is possible. Proper nutrition and recovery are essential because if you aren’t getting enough nutrients in, you will burn off that precious muscle. And if you aren’t getting enough protein and sleep, you certainly will be beat down from this many hours spent training.

Leg Extension: Potentially Useless 🤷‍♂️

Leg extension can be a useless exercise unless you go all in. Seriously, you have to go near failure with the intensity on this particular exercise. Even still, you might not get as much quad engagement as you’d like because your hips will externally rotate. Enter the yoga block. Squeeze this sucker between your legs and you’re instantly going to get more quad engagement and also activate your adductors.

Don’t have a yoga block? Just shove any miscellaneous object between your thighs, just be careful kids 😬🍆

Kodiak Pancake Mix 🥞

🥞 Kodiak pancake mix has pretty good macros, and if you add some egg whites or whey protein to the recipe they get even better. I originally 💩 on the Kodiak premade waffles, but the reality is I’ve had them a couple times since then and if you’re in the mood for a dessert kind of breakfast, they do the trick.

Would either of those Kodiak products be a go-to for me? Probably not, but maybe if I was hungover after a party and I had to get my 🍑 to the gym it might be a sensible way to start my day. Just be mindful that adding butter and syrup to this sucker will jack up the calories significantly.

NYC Marathon 🏅

Last weekend was the #NYCMarathon 🏅 I was fortunate to be able to support some of my clients from the sidelines as they ran 26.2 miles around the five boroughs of New York.

Training for a marathon requires intense focus and dedication. These athletes were not only committed to their running but also to their recovery, strength training, and nutrition. A marathon is an incredible accomplishment and they should be proud.

I’m not a run coach and I don’t help people specifically with a marathon training plan, but I do help them with their nutritional needs as they increase their mileage. I also help people lose body fat which is an easier way to improve your pace. I did the weight training programming for several of these runners.

The atmosphere was electric in New York City and I was so excited for every single person who ran it 🎉
