Creatine and Hair Loss

Creatine has an ugly history of being blamed when in fact athletes are using steroids. There is a single study from 2009 involving college rugby players in South Africa in which all of the rugby players taking creatine also had increased levels of DHT. Correlation does not equal causation, meaning that just because this portion of the population happen to have increased DHT levels while also taking creatine, doesn’t mean that the creatine caused their increased DHT levels.

Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, two former Major League Baseball players, were pulled into Congress asked why all of these baseball players were hitting balls out of the park. They blamed it on creatine. This study is attempting to say that increased DHT is not caused by creatine. Creatine has an ugly past of being blamed for athletes bad behavior. Steroids cause hair loss, probably not creatine.

VO2max at Xfit Lab in Westchester, NY

I’m at @xFitlab in White Plains, NY with Dr. Isiah Robinson. We did an InBody scan, we tested my resting metabolic rate, and we did my VO2max. If you’re interested in getting these tests run reach out to xFitlab. I personally find the RMR and VO2max very fascinating and useful for my daily nutrition and training.

VO2max is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption attainable during physical exertion. The higher your VO2max the less likely you are to die from heart disease, therefore it is a great indicator of lifespan. I am not a cardio bunny by any stretch of the imagination so I was thrilled to be in the superior range.

Hamstring Focused Leg Day

My current training split is a leg-push-pull. In today’s episode I’m going to take you through training hamstrings on leg day. When possible, I split my quads and hamstrings apart. That’s not always realistic for everyone, but when I can do it it helps me train each muscle optimally.

Zone 2 Cardio

Zone 2 cardio increases your VO2max and lowers your resting heart rate. Both your VO2max and resting heart rate are strong indicators of your cardiovascular health 🫀

That’s why 80% of the time I spend doing cardio, it’s zone 2 with my heart rate between 105-133 beats per minute. I do 150 minutes weekly of zone 2 cardio spread across 3-4 sessions. Sometimes I’m walking on an incline with a weighted vest, other times I’m on a stationary bike, and almost always I am having a conversation on my phone through my AirPods.
