The foundation of strength is stability. One of the most essential considerations when choosing back exercises is your ability to brace.
Here I’m seen doing a cable row where I’m having to rely on my core and hip flexors to stabilize. That’s great for function, but not so great for building muscle.
When trying to build muscle I want to be able to generate as much force as possible, so I like exercises where my chest is supported or I can have my hand or leg pressed into an object. This allows me to be more stabilized so I can pull with greater force.
